Columbus, OH – The 2010 National Minority Business Directory is being published, and entrepreneurs and small business owners are invited to be listed in it for FREE. The directory will feature thousands of listings from companies and firms owned by African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and more.

Listing is easy. Interested ones simply have to visit the directory’s website and complete a brief form. Those who enlist will also receive a free copy of the directory when it is released.

The publication will be the largest, most relevant, and most up-to-date compilation of minority-owned companies. Obtaining a FREE listing in the publication is equivalent to about $5,000 in free advertising and exposure.

For fiscal year 2010, the ILAACP is pleased to announce the release of the Youth In Prevention Mini-Grant Request for Proposals (RFP). This initiative is a $36,000 statewide, grant-making initiative providing 12 grassroots organizations with a mini-grant of up to $3,000 to design and implement an innovative, youth-led advocacy project.

The proposed project must address one area of substance abuse impacting African-American communities – i.e. underage drinking, tobacco abuse, or drug use.

In order to be eligible, the grant applicant must meet the following three criteria:

• Must be a “grass roots” not-for-profit corporation or tax-exempt youth-serving organization providing services in Illinois;
• Demonstrate experience providing youth with structured leadership opportunities to design and implement programs; and
• Applicants CANNOT be a recipient of a grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services during the application and funding period

The Open Society Institute Campaign for Black Male Achievement and the Association of Black Foundation Executives host the NYC premiere screening of Beyond the Bricks, a short documentary that explores solutions to the poor academic performance and low graduation rates of school-age black males in the United States.

Beyond the Bricks follows two students from Newark, New Jersey, as they struggle to improve their circumstances. The film includes interviews with educators, administrators, elected officials, and activists who offer their ideas about solutions to the crisis facing young black men.

A Q & A with an expert panel will follow a short reception and screening of the film.
